Anyone seeking sustenance after a hectic day of shopping and battling crowds can visit the Hudson's Restaurant on Friday. The restaurant is offering a $2.99 breakfast from 7-11 a.m. and a $5 happy hour from 3-7 p.m. (Ed Suba Jr./Akron Beacon Journal)

From a photo with the Grinch to traditional caroling, the Merchants of Hudson have all things Christmas coming to downtown Hudson on Friday.

The merchants have a membership of 80 Hudson-area businesses, and all will be welcoming shoppers to what has been newly named Plaid Friday, says Sharon Custer.

Custer is the manager of Nicky Nicole, a store with fashion, gifts and accessories for girls of all ages, located at 99 First St.  She says that this is the first year the concept of Plaid Friday in lieu of Black Friday has been embraced by local merchants.  It is an idea, Custer says, that is gaining ground across the country.

The purpose behind the designation is to promote small, local businesses.

Anyone wearing plaid into Nicky Nicole on Friday is entitled to a 15 percent discount on all regularly priced merchandise, and several other shops are offering their own discount for plaid-wearing, as well.

The Learned Owl Book Store is hosting the Grinch, who will pose for photos from noon to 4 p.m. on Friday, Saturday and Sunday.  He will appear every hour on the hour for a period of 30 minutes.

Store employee Kate Schlademan says that they will feature a Dr. Seuss sale, where those who buy two books get a third one free.

The Learned Owl is also asking customers to purchase books for the giving tree for First Book of Greater Akron.  Anyone purchasing a book for the charity will receive 20 percent off the price.

For those looking for sustenance after visiting those 80 establishments, Hudson's Restaurant is offering a $2.99 breakfast from 7-11 a.m. and a $5 happy hour from 3-7 p.m.

If you prefer Santa Claus to the Grinch, he can be found at Keller Williams Chervenic Realty from 2-4 p.m. at their offices at 148 N. Main St.

The Merchants of Hudson are sponsoring several holiday events that begin in late afternoon, with the lighting of about a thousand luminaries at 4:30 p.m.

The Hudson League for Service is hosting a caroling event at the gazebo at 5 p.m., and Keller Williams Chervenic Realty invites those attending the caroling back to their office for cookies and hot chocolate at the conclusion of the program.

Boy Scout Troop 333 will be setting up their Christmas trees on Friday and will be open for business on Saturday from 9 a.m. until 7 p.m. They are located on the Cabin on the Green, at the corner of routes 91 and 303.

A complete listing of all stores and events is available on the Merchants of Hudson website.
