Steve VanderSchie

Language Arts and Social Studies, Grade 5, Hudson City Schools

Steve VanderSchie has been teaching for 11 years at Hudson City Schools, and is currently teaching 5th grade Language Arts and Social Studies at East Wood Elementary. Steve received a Bachelor’s Degree in Broadcast Journalism from Eastern Michigan University and a Master’s in Elementary Education from Kent State University. He enjoys competitive swimming and is a dedicated Cleveland sports fan. His wife, DeAnna, is also a teacher in Hudson City Schools and they have one son, Gavin, who is two years old. Steve’s ambition is “to leave a strong legacy through career and family.” His teaching philosophy is that all students have the ability and desire to learn and succeed. Steve expresses that his favorite teaching moment is the humor and happiness fifth graders bring to the classroom. Every day is a new lesson on how to appreciate life from an eleven year-old.

Nominator: “In addition to being an outstanding language arts teacher and excellent role model for our students, Steve has taken a strong leadership role on our staff while advocating for and creating a response to an intervention program that helps struggling students.”
